Summary: Selphie lies in a hospital bed.
Quistis stepped quietly into the infirmary. Kadowaki sat, head bowed forward, asleep at her desk, and with a smile, Quistis crept past her, into the little room where only the worst injured SeeDs were ever put. She turned to shut the door and then moved forward, sighing quietly at the sight of Selphie laying there, her body literally wrapped in bandages.
The usual cheerfulness of the small girl was absent. It was like the sun had gone dark.
Quietly, Quistis arranged the little bunch of flowers in a glass beside the bed. The sight of Selphie laying there brought an old tune to mind, and for a moment, she couldn't remember what it was. Then she remembered, and the words seemed appropriate.
She sat down on the edge of the bed, taking one bandaged hand in hers.
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine, you make me happy when skies are grey, you'll never know dear how much I love you, oh please don't take my sunshine away.
A child's song. But she couldn't get the tune out of her head.
Selphie's smile had the power to lift anybody's spirits. With Selphie as her best friend, she was sure she had hardly ever had chance to even frown, let alone cry. The girl could be serious, of course, but she was always smiling. Always.
Except now.
Quistis knew that what Selphie needed was time. Time and rest and peace. But for the meantime, she wasn't quite sure what to do with herself without that cheerful smile to see them both through. She couldn't say it to Selphie, and she wasn't sure Selphie knew, but she loved every moment she spent with Selphie, loved all the small things that made life happy instead of just tolerable.
"When you're better, Selphie," she whispered, knowing that maybe, just maybe, she would never have a chance to keep her promise, "I'm going to go on all the damned trains you want. Me, and you, and as many trains as I can get you on."
She lay the bandaged hand back down on the bed, and left the infirmary as quietly as she could.
