Fandom: Final Fantasy IV
Pairing: Rosa/Rydia

Rating: PG
Summary: Rosa is just perfect. For [livejournal.com profile] mount_ordeals.

Angels never came down, there’s no one here they want to hang around
But if they knew, if they knew you at all, then one by one the angels, angels would fall
I’ve crept into your temple, I have slept upon your pew, I’ve dreamed of the divinity
Inside and out of you, I want it more than truth, I can taste it on my breath
I would give my life just for a little death
-Melissa Etheridge; Angels Would Fall

Rydia thinks Rosa is just perfect.

Whether she's fighting in battle or just walking along or talking to Cecil or laughing with Edge, Rosa is perfect. It's not just in the movements, in the smooth draw back of the bow or the sure hit of the arrow. It's not in the grace that she walks with, though she is graceful. It's not in the way her eyes light up when she talks to Cecil, when she laughs.

She's just so good.

And Rydia is very aware, when she's around her, that she's not as good. There's Rosa, all pure and white with her healing curing magic, and then there's her, Rydia, with only black magic and the vague memory of being able to heal someone. She's not quite sure when she lost the talent or why it didn't matter then, but it matters now.

Black and white. Tainted and pure. Even though that's not what it is, even though black magic isn't considered evil or anything like that, Rydia feels it as a taint, the ability to cause only death.

She tries not to use her magic, not too much, anyway. Only when it's to protect someone.

It's not just the magic though. She hungers for something Rosa has and she hasn't and she has no idea what it really is. She wants to possess Rosa, find out what it is, keep it for herself, maybe, but at the same time Rosa is untouchable, and Rydia thinks of half-remembered stories of women in white clothes with beautiful feathered wings.

After a battle, Kain and Edge and Cecil worry and talk about the battle, and it's Rydia's job to revive Rosa. She leans close, holding the Life in her hand, wishing it could be her own magic curling around Rosa, bringing her back to the warm bright world. She's inches away from Rosa, inches away from kissing her, and then she pulls away and gives her the Life and gives her a hand up when she's revived.

Wow. Just...wow. I really like how you have Rydia perceiving her own (black/summon) magic as somehow inferior and dirty compared to Rosa. Very nice!

I'm glad you liked it. I love the song (Angels Would Fall) that I quoted at the beginning and I tried to write something that would sort of go with it without being a songfic. :D

Yeah, I do that a lot - pull inspiration from a song without making a songfic :)
