"Guess this is goodbye," he says, a little awkwardly, wanting to use a petname, make her understand how dear to him she is, how much he's going to miss her. "Since time goes differently and all down there..."

It's been a good week, a very good week, a week where they've both pretended their time together will never end. They've sneaked kisses and held hands and generally behaved like teenagers, and if Cecil and Rosa noticed, if anyone noticed, nobody mentioned it. Edge has been pretending that he doesn't have Gramps, and Rydia has been pretending she isn't drawn back to the Land of Summoned Monsters.
"I will," he says, but he knows he won't be able to. He takes her hands in his and holds them for a moment, and then brightens, smiling, "I won't forget you."
"Nor I, you," she promises, smiling back. It's easier to smile when he's smiling. She lets him draw her close and she kisses him softly. He's cocksure and arrogant and still half a young boy, but then she's still half a young girl, too, and for a moment they're just teenagers in love.
Then she pulls away and she's Rydia the summoner and he's King Edward of Eblan, and they part with a few formal words and aching hearts.
