FFX-2: Choices

Fandom: Final Fantasy X-2
Pairing: Gippal/Baralai
Warnings: None
Rating: G
Summary: Making over mistakes into choices. Response to [livejournal.com profile] cupcakemonster's Question.

For a while he can't comprehend it. What she's suggested. He knows that he and Baralai would be good to the child. That Baralai wants her. And Gippal wants it more than anything, that child, Rikku's mistake made over into his and Baralai's choice.

So he gets serious.

He doesn't do that often. More often, he laughs and won't get serious. But he does, now, he gets serious and he looks at Rikku and at the baby he's holding.

The words come in Al Bhed but it's just the same, crystal clear meaning all wrapped up in Gippal's serious.

"We would be good parents to her. We love her already. She needs a name and we could give her a name, and two parents, and a home, but we can't give her a mother. Even if we take this kid, we need you, Rikku. I won't take this kid from you unless you're sure."

It's hard, because he could say yes, yes, yes! and snatch her away from Rikku and make this baby his, his and Baralai's, never a mistake.

But he keeps saying it, because it hurts right.

She might become a mistake to him, the thing that messes up his friendship with Rikku, if it's not done right.

"If you're sure, Rikku, yes, we'll take her. But you have to be sure."

Somewhere, he turned into a lot of a thinker, and that surprises him, but it doesn't surprise Baralai at all. He just smiles, because he's known all along that beneath all the layers, there's that thinker. He's known Gippal a lot longer than Gippal has known himself.

(Gippal is happier than he's ever been before to know that Baralai is proud of him.)

Rikku does not say no, but does not say yes either. It's a tricky situation.

I love how Gippal is so happy about Baralai's pride in him and I enjoy serious Gippal immensely. I love his thought about just taking the child and his realization that such a thing could be a mistake.
