She doesn't end up doing paperwork for him. Instead, he takes that to Bevelle with him -- takes a place on Baralai's desk, a little corner for himself, and works with his knee pressing against Baralai's, comfortably. He's not all that patient with it but Baralai's little study helps, always calm and cool and quiet, almost like his own little place back in Djose.
Instead of doing the paperwork, he asks Rikku to lead the Machine Faction whenever he's gone.
With her energy, he's sure she can do it. People like her, and she's tough enough to stand up to even the stupidest and meanest of the people who worked for him. And anyway, with his blessing, she gets on fine.
So he's flitting off every few weeks to be with Baralai for days, weeks, months, until Rikku is asking him when the flippin' wedding will be, already?! And that makes him laugh and blush and shrug helplessly.
She still shares a bed with him, sometimes, in Djose, when he's there. Like they used to share a bed when he had the bad dreams and the nasty thoughts, when half of his world was stolen away, numbed, gone. He cuddles up to her just like always, and listens to her sigh, heavyheavy, and he doesn't know what to do to get his light Rikku back.
"Are you happy?" he asks her, because he can't imagine why she wouldn't be and yet he doesn't think she is.
