Summary: Bestest friend in the whole wide world. Response to
cupcakemonster's Outside Looking In.
At first, it's all happyhappy, but Rikku seems to be more than half claws more than half the time, and it can't always be that time of the month, y'know? Gippal's in love, but he's not that far gone, and Rikku is still his best friend.
He half wants to stay with Baralai in Bevelle forever, but half of him wants to take Rikku and do something special, something special so she knows that he's so thankful to her he'll never know how to say it. Djose isn't special enough, Bevelle is Baralai, Besaid is Lady Yuna and her little sideshow, so he's not sure where to take her, except there's lots of desert, and that's a place they both know.
So he drags her out to the desert, and she's a little complaining and his heart is in Bevelle, but after they sulk at each other a little, they're idly digging and oh, a machina, so they stop sulking and start digging.
"Think it's something good?" he asks her, a little breathless, the sand all hot and dry and slip-sliding under his fingers, slipping away like the sand of an hourglass. Rikku is hot and laughing, just like when they were kids and they'd find potions in the sand and pretend they were treasures.
"It'd better be!"
It's nothing big, what they dig up, except if Gippal was feeling metaphorical and all of that, he'd call what they found (refound) out there in the desert their friendship, which hadn't really been the same since Rikku kicked Sin's ass with her other friends or since Gippal found his other friends, or some combination of the two. And all of a sudden, while he's turning that all over in his head, Gippal knows they're both strong, in their own ways, and he knows where Rikku is so very very weak.
They have a tent, out in the desert, and he reaches for his water while she lies there trying to sleep, and squirts a little bit over her to get her attention.
"Hey, Rikku!"
She hisses at him and jumps on top of him, pinning him down, and he grins up at her, happyhappy games that children play.
"I love you," he says, grinning from ear to ear, "and you're my very best friend in the whole wide world. Right?"
He's said that before, to her and only to her, but it never meant so much before. It says thank you and it echoes with help me back when he needed her. And he still needs her, oh yes.
