cupcakemonster's Let Go, Hold Fast.
Rikku's off to save the world, and he's left behind.
Well.
That sucks.
It sucks for a while but then everyone is happyhappy and Yevon and Sin are gone, so Gippal does what he wasn't allowed to before -- he goes to see the temples, with the Fayth there like they're dreaming, for no more summoners to come. He thinks about Baralai more than ever, and his temples and his cunning and his smile that went away.
And he's determined to make something of himself in the new world, anyway, because even if he wasn't any good against Sin or the abomination, he's always been good with machina and he could be good with people, too. So he's all smile-smile and he draws them in, with laughter and jokes and gentle punches to their shoulders, makes them belong, Al Bhed and Yevonite and everyone in between.
The Yevonites are so clumsy with the machina, and so silly about the desert, but he teaches and Nhadala teaches and they get a good thing going. And Home is gone, long gone, but there's Djose temple now, all bright and electric and he loves it there, with all the power of so much time gone by in the very air they all breathe.
And Rikku's there, with her friends, and oh, Paine, so he teases. He teases like he used to tease Paine sometimes, like he teased Rikku when they were kids, and he's all smile-smile and wink, and he makes Rikku all riled up and full of energy, and he loves his life now, really does.
He just wishes he could make his way to Bevelle, to see the one person in the world he wants to see, more than Paine, more than Rikku.
