FFX-2: The Strong One
Fandom: Final Fantasy X-2
Pairing: None
Warnings: Angst
Rating: PG
Summary: Gippal doesn't forget about her, even when he's fighting and falling in love and being betrayed. Response to
cupcakemonster's No More Tears.
He doesn't forget her, while he's training with the really grumpy guy and the really pretty guy and the girl. He thinks of Rikku all the time, compares her to Paine, thinks about telling her about Baralai. Baralai with the sweet smile that makes him go more than gooey inside, with the eyes that threaten the consistency of his knees, Baralai, who he just wants to kiss and kiss and kiss and kiss.
He doesn't kiss him, though. Still afraid of getting another punch in the eye.
They become his friends and he thinks Rikku would get along with Paine, even if it's the kind of getting along that really just seems like tolerating. There's a Rikku shaped place in him that suggests little pranks to play on Paine allthetime, and the only reason he doesn't do it is because he's not as quick and slick as Rikku at doing things like that.
After Mushroom Rock road, he's left alone again, without Baralai's smile or Paine's reluctant laugh, with the bullet in him weighing heavier than anything, heavier than betrayal, and he blanks out the rest.
Like the kid who ran away when he was rejected by another boy, he waits for Rikku to find him again, after learning where she's gone, and he smiles and comforts himself with the knowledge that she's out there, kicking Sin's ass like he was supposed to.
He wonders why she ended up being the strong one. Maybe it was true, what the other boys said about him.

I like the way Gippal imagine Rikku paying pranks on Paine and the way you describe the "Rikku shaped place in him."
Awww poor self-doubting Gippal. :(
