Summary: Rikku stands by him in everything, really. Response to
cupcakemonster's Whirlwind.
They think it makes him weak and stupid or something, so he shows them how weak and stupid he isn't. He learns machina better than any of them, and shows Rikku how to do all the fiddly bits, and he hangs around with the grown ups who don't listen to the kiddy rumours of how he's youknowthatway. He listens to stories about the deepdeep desert where even the Al Bhed don't go often and then tells them to Rikku and he keeps his thoughts off boys for now.
He hasn't forgotten the way Rikku went off to get revenge for him, or the way she cried after, but he's never quite sure how to say thankyouRikkuforeverything because that doesn't sound like enough, not after everything.
He hopes she knows how grateful he is, anyway.
When he decides to join the Crimson Squad, it's to get away from the whispery-whispers about him which never quite fade away. It doesn't bother him, but it bothers everyone else, and that's part of it.
The other part is that the Al Bhed are making a home for themselves. And Gippal wants Rikku to be safe there. So he's determined to join the rest of Spira in the fight against Sin.
When he tells Rikku, she's all clingcling and warning. She doesn't mind him going but she's scared for him -- "Gippal, you couldn't even stand up to the boys here! I was the one who beat them all up for you!" and he laughs and promises to get tougher.
