People like him even with the eyepatch, and it makes him smile, and Rikku is the best, no exceptions and no arguments, and no matter how he dreams of all gone black, all in the dark she wakes him up to the light and that's okay. And half the time she's there to stop him falling, 'til he doesn't fall (much) any more.
And people like him. And he gets extra pity for being half in the dark, when really he can see just as (almost as) well, so it's all okay, it's really all okay. He still dreams of the dark, and of getting his revenge. He thinks of their faces, their circle-in-a-circle eyes, and he knows that when he sees them, he'll kill them, unless Rikku gets there first.
Sometimes he hopes she will, so he tells her what they look like.
He flirts with girls just like every other boy, but he's coming to a conclusion and he decides to test his hypothesis out on Rikku.
He thinks about testing it out with a kiss, but decides that it wouldn't be any fun to kiss Rikku anyway (and that'd prove his hypothesis, if he thought about it enough, but he isn't into sitting quiet and thinking, never was).
So he just tells her.
She's snuggled up in bed with him, comfy-comfy like a teddy bear, and he tugs her a little closer, tugs a braid to make sure she's awake.
"Rikku?"
"Hmmmm?"
"I don't like girls. Not really. I mean, I like you, but I don't like like you. You know?" The words come out all wrong and he tries again, deepbreathGippal. "I mean, I don't... girls are just friends."
She pushes up, gives him a confused look with the cute screwed up expression that makes him want to poke her nose. "Huh?"
He chews his lip a bit and gives her a careful look (which is harder than it sounds, with one eye). "I think I like boys. You know. Like most boys like girls."
