cupcakemonster's Scratched Up Coin.
He wakes up and the world is darker than it should be, and he wonders what the fuck and thinks they can't have given him a black eye that bad, and then it's all flare and pain even though he's half numb, and he cries out and hates himself for it.
He puts his hand up to feel it, carefulcareful, and when his fingers brush rough bandage, all he can feel is darknumbempty.
"It'll be okay soon, young lad," someone promises, Al Bhed and comforting and that makes him relax a little. "You remember what happened, right? Well, we've done our best for you, and you'll be just fine."
So he doesn't ask about the bandages just yet, and he lies back and gets more rest like they tell him, but when Rikku slips in to visit him (not for the first time, he's told), and takes his hand, little fingers curling round his, he can't help but ask her (though maybe he shouldn't).
"Rikku? Tell me... how bad is it?"
And he thinks from the little catch of her breath and the squeeze of her hand that it's bad.
