SPN: Five Times Dean Tried To Tell Castiel He Loved Him, and the One Time He Finally Understood

Fandom: Supernatural
Main characters: Dean, Castiel, Sam, Bobby
Referenced characters: N/a
Pairings: Dean/Castiel
Contains: N/a
Rating: G
Summary: Castiel is the last one, the absolute last one, to understand.

Sam got it the first time. He'd known for a while, in the back of his mind, that Dean was hopelessly in love with Cas. It was no surprise at all when that thought came to the front of his mind and fit in with everything else, with a triumphant and very definite click. He was pretty sure, though, that anyone who hadn't lived with Dean all (okay, most) of his life wouldn't have got it yet.

It was the stupidest thing. It was the way Dean came into the room and the first thing he looked for was Cas. Once upon a time it would've been Sam, obsessively checking he was okay or something, but now the first place he looks is Cas, and seeing him, well, he doesn't smile, but something eases off around his shoulders. "Hey Cas," he says, holding out an extra coffee. "Got some for you."

Sam's not sure if he's glad for Dean, that he's finally in love with someone who he might maybe have a snowball's chance in hell with, or whether he's jealous, because that look would have gone to him, once, and the extra coffee would once have been for him.

"I don't require coffee," Castiel says, absently, focused on the book in his hands. Sam's the only one who catches Dean's flicker of disappointment, and he's abruptly catapulted from gladness/jealousy to a kind of pity, because it's obvious. Cas doesn't get it.

---

Bobby ain't an idiot. He's not going to kid himself he knows everything that goes on in Dean's mind, because Dean's mind is full of crazy twists and turns that don't make any sense at all. He's also not going to kid himself he's the first one to notice. Sam's probably feeling a little bit smug for getting it so far ahead of anyone else, the idjit.

The problem is, Bobby's pretty sure Castiel is going to be the last to know. It's stupid, just Dean offering to help out with the piles of books Castiel is looking through, nothing groundbreaking -- and yet anyone with half a brain can tell that Dean actually wants to. That Castiel's little shake of his head is no favour, because Dean doesn't want to be anywhere else (for once).

Apparently, Castiel doesn't have half a brain. Trust Dean, to pick a guy who doesn't know when he's saying 'I love you'.

---

The third time is in some dingy motel. The sheets are scratchy and Dean has not had the best sleep in the world, and there Cas is standing at the foot of his bed, demanding he get up and go places. And Castiel's totally fucking oblivious -- has no idea what it means -- when Dean quite honestly says, "Good to see you, Cas."

"I'm glad to see you too, Dean," he says, gravely. "I brought you coffee. And a slice of pie?"

And Dean quite honestly means it when he says, "Okay, how soon do you want the wedding?"

Castiel frowns. "Dean..."

So that didn't work, either.

She hasn't been dead long. Long enough, though. Long enough for the world to be changing. The things that she had to hide, the guilty secrets, the reason for her eventual death -- this Dean Winchester guy has no reason to hide his feelings. Not really. Not in comparison. It still shocks her -- a little -- to hear those feelings naked in the guy's voice when he tells the other man to be careful.

It shocks her how the other guy doesn't even seem to notice. How he can walk away. She had to read the tiniest cues, the tiniest nuances. She got killed for less than this.

Some things don't change, like the look on the guy's face, the frustrated helplessness. She can relate.

---

Castiel is beginning to feel that he's missing something. There's a faintly expectant look in Dean's eyes, and he doesn't know what he wants -- if he knew, Castiel thinks, he'd give it, because he wants to see that hope blossom into a smile, he wants Dean to smile at him. "This part is the... spark plug?"

"That's right," Dean says, and their hands brush and their bodies are close, and Castiel wishes, oh Lord, he wishes he knew this language, this language of bodies and quiet, because he doesn't, the words that are in it are just beyond his reach.

---

Castiel does have half a brain, though, after all. And Dean doesn't quite need to say it. Not quite.

"You better not fucking leave me," Dean says, which Castiel realises means something else as well, something deeper, something very, very important.

"I love you too," he says, despite the pain, and then Dean nearly drops him and calls him a son of a bitch, but it's alright.

He gets it now.

Oh, this was wonderful. I love the insights that looking in on the relationship from an outside perspective can give us. And Dean's wordless way of communicating what he's feeling was perfect.
