Squall is strong. No question about it. He's a wizard with a gunblade, and no one can stand up to him when he's got one in his hands. At least, that's what everyone says, and Zell reckons they're probably right. However, in a hand to hand fight, there's no doubt who is the master.
Zell is sat, quite firmly, on top of Squall. "You need to sleep more," he says, with a note of triumph in his voice because, hey, he just won a fight with Squall. Except that kinda fades when he looks at Squall because Squall's almost grey with tiredness, bags under his eyes and a seemingly permanent strained look about him -- something about the eyebrows, about the hard line of his mouth. Zell's voice gentles. "Come on, man. I don't wanna have to sit on you all day, and you won't sleep that well with me on top of you."
"I'm fine," Squall says, flatly. Sometimes, when he gets like this, it's like he totally forgets the two years of progress towards opening up and being a good friend, the one year they've spent together as more than that. It's like he's back to scowling at the world.
Zell sits more firmly on him. "Stop it."
"Zell -- "
"Just stop it. You need to get some sleep, and I don't want to have to threaten stupid shit like walking out if you don't spend more time with me. And I'm not Seifer, so I'm not even sure starting a fight with you would work."
"I'm quite glad you're not Seifer," Squall says, in an amused sort of tone, and Zell huffs, hands fisting in Squall's shirt.
"Squall, just..."
"An hour's more work, and I'll sleep," Squall says -- not a question, a statement. Zell doesn't move. "Zell."
"No."
There's silence for a moment and then Squall's mouth twitches a little. "Would you really leave me?"
"I'd threaten to."
"Would you leave?" -- and there it is, the real softening of Squall's voice, the slow opening, a glimpse beneath his defences. Zell sighs and tugs at Squall's hair.
"No. That's why it's a crappy threat."
"Good," Squall says, looking more relieved than he should -- because apparently it takes this long to grasp that Zell won't leave.
"Bed," Zell says, firmly, aiming for that soft spot, that chink in the armour. "Please?"
A year ago, Zell wouldn't have felt the sudden release of tension in Squall's body under his, the change is so small. Zell's learnt, though. Learning, even. All the time. Squall doesn't have to open up far enough to say yes, not with Zell, not now. Not when it's so hard.
Zell gets off him. "Bed," he says, again, and helps Squall up.

i'm pouring through your work and the drabbles of Seifer/Zell on my comm to try to help me find my muses so i can finish my stuff.
this. all of it. the sweet moment, the chink in the armor, the crappy threats and the little things... this is what i need to make me start falling in love with these two again.
