There's a sense of warning somewhere in her, when she meets Samantha's eyes and says yes to a date. She doesn't know where the hell it comes from. Some other life, she thinks, maybe, and gets a dizzying flash of a tall man and a sunny grin and big hands and a love that was like a steady warm sun and ended in terrible fire.
"It'll be good this time," Samantha whispers, in Jess' ear, after the first time, their first time -- and when Jess asks what she means, Sam has no answer.
It is good -- it is, it really is. They fall into a life together easily, into a routine, into love. It's almost frightening how easy it is, how natural, when Jess stops to think about it. When she tries to tell Sam, Sam just shushes her, with her fingers or a kiss or by talking about something else. It's easier to let Samantha have her secrets, even if that too is frighteningly familiar, even if sometimes her belly tightens with a visceral warning.
"It's good this time," Samantha says, again and again, and she says it when Jessica wakes up from strange dreams of fire. She holds on as if she's afraid that something is going to snatch her away, and Jess almost knows why, can taste it, ashen and hot, at the back of her mouth. Every time it passes and every time Jess decides again that Sam's right, that it's good this time --
