Summary: Juubei has re-trained himself now to really notice the things he didn't realise mattered.
Juubei is sure that when they were children, he missed things. He is sure he didn't catalogue the shifting hues of Kazuki's hair -- as he wishes now that he had -- and he can barely recall the first times they touched, the first time they kissed. He can't remember how Kazuki's lips felt then -- were they rough, cracked, smooth, soft? He can't remember what Kazuki was wearing, the colours, he can't remember the look on Kazuki's face.
He knows better now, knows to treasure even the smallest details. The whisper of fabric as Kazuki moves -- is it silk that he's wearing? -- and the soft sounds of his bells. The warmth of him nearby, the sense that the whole world is a little colder when he pulls away. Even the snarls in his long hair are precious, are something to remember. The faint taste of tea on his tongue, or the good clean scent of him. The feel of his lips curving into a smile under Juubei's fingers.
Juubei trains himself now to notice these things, to store them inside, until he can sense how Kazuki is smiling from the way his bells chime as he tilts his head. You learn things from mistakes, always, and this is what Juubei has learnt -- that nothing should be wasted, nothing should be lost on him.
"I wish you could see me," Kazuki says, a breath away, no more than that. Juubei touches his hair -- freshly washed, smelling like flowers, still wet -- and his neck, where his skin is still damp and hot, and smiles.
"I can," he says, knowing Kazuki won't understand.
