Anyone else might have supposed that Heero would be a little kinder to him when he was severely injured in the line of duty. It wasn't fair that he wasn't getting a lecture about being careful, he just hadn't...
"...put the safety on!"
He looked up into Heero's worried, annoyed face, and smiled sheepishly, pretending to have heard a word he was saying. It was endearing how much Heero was fussing about this - just a bullet wound, after all. "I'll be more careful, next time, I promise."
"You shot yourself in the foot," Heero said, disbelievingly, dubious about how that could even happen, never mind how it could be prevented. "I have never done that, I don't even need to think about it, it's instinctive."
"You've been handling guns since you were a toddler," Ciaran pointed out, a little sulky, a little hurt. Heero sighed and reached out to run his fingers through Ciaran's hair, a silent apology. He wouldn't apologise out loud for this fussing - he felt he was owed it.
"Just remember the safety next time," he suggested.
"I will," Ciaran promised. Heero leaned down and kissed Ciaran lightly, smiling.
"I guess this means I'll have to take you out to a range and try stop you doing a repeat of this, or shooting your own team mates."
It wasn't exactly a day out, but it was a day together and Ciaran jumped eagerly at the chance. "I'd love that."
Heero smiled and took his hand, glancing down at the bandage around Ciaran's foot. Their fingers tangled and Ciaran hid a smile. Duo had warned him how protective Heero might be - but protecting him from himself? He had to admit he needed it, though...
He still couldn't believe he'd shot himself in the foot.
