Notes: Prompter wanted a fic based on Set the Fire to the Third Bar (youtube/spotify). I listened to it about thirty times and then wrote this.
Sam's not an idiot. He'd have to be, to miss what's between Castiel and Dean, even if he's never even seen them touch before. They haven't seen much of Castiel -- he's hiding, hiding from heaven and from hell, hiding from everything he's ever known. Sam would feel guilty, but he knows that Castiel chose as he did for Dean, not for him. Castiel doesn't even look at him. So he's never even tried to say anything.
It figures that Dean found someone else to hold him together. It was Sam that was breaking him, after all. And there's only so much a brother can do, even if Dean spent most of his life trying to be everything for his little brother.
Still, Sam doesn't know how to feel -- not when Castiel and Dean are together, not even when they're apart. Dean seems different, then, like he's half-listening to conversations and half-listening for the sound of wings, for the sound of Castiel's steps across the bar's dirty floors. On hunts, he's himself, perfectly honed, attention sharpening to focus on a single point, but. The rest of the time he's waiting, even though Sam doesn't think Dean quite realises that he is.
Dean doesn't even seem surprised when he does hear that step. He turns to meet Castiel and it's like they make a world of their own, a bubble of calm, that shuts Sam out, even though they don't even touch each other.
"Castiel," Dean says, and he doesn't even sound glad, but Sam knows anyway. And Castiel must know.
"Dean," Castiel says. And suddenly, they are touching -- Castiel's hands on Dean's shoulders, their foreheads touching, their eyes closed.
Sam looks away. This isn't for him.
