Summary: Tradition burned down.
"I don't know why we had to come here," Kazuki says. He holds one of his bells tightly in his hand, and his face is determined, strained. Juubei aches to do something to bring a smile to that beautiful face once more. He clenches one fist at his side, brings needles into his other hand.
"It's a place where we can become strong," he says, slowly. "Where I can become strong enough to protect you, Kazuki."
Kazuki barely seems to move, but Juubei catches the ripple in the threads anyway as they dig into the flesh of their opponents, bringing them to their knees. "Maybe here I can become strong enough that I don't need protection."
"Kazuki..."
"So I can protect you, too," Kazuki says, and he is smiling, just an edge of a smile, and there are tears in his eyes too. "We're all that's left. You, and me, and Sakura."
"Kazuki," Juubei says again, and bows his head. He does not touch Kazuki -- that is not his place, not yet, he can't yet reach across the divide.
Sakura smiles, just behind them. She thinks -- hopes -- that, someday, Juubei will. Tradition burned away already, after all.
