"They've grown up well," Cid says, watching the group of young SeeDs. He raises his glass to them, turning to smile at Edea. "Don't you think?"
"More so over the last few months than in the whole of the rest of their lives," she says, quietly. Regret lingers in her expression, in the downward turn of her lips. Cid moves closer, slips his arm around her and squeezes. Her long hair is down tonight, as black and shining as when he first knew her, so long ago.
"They needed to grow up sometime."
Edea shakes her head. "I just wish it had been... different."
Cid squeezes again. "It might be that this way was the best way, you know. It's dangerous to go dwelling on the past."
"As Ultimecia proved," Edea says, grimly, and then she shakes her head, shaking the thought away. "It looks like Rinoa's persuaded Squall to dance. It almost has to be seen to be believed..."
"You should have seen the first time," Cid says, and his laughter bubbles up, bright and infectious, a sound that she hasn't heard in far too long. "He danced worse than I do. It was an act, of course."
"I thought you'd got the hang of it?"
"I'm out of practice," Cid says. He pulls away to set his empty glass down and Edea takes his hand.
"Let's see what you remember," she says, and she pulls him out onto the dancefloor, and they don't even notice everyone looking at them, only each other. Edea doesn't wince -- much -- when he steps on her toes.
