Summary: Arthur speaks to Guinevere just after she's given up Bran. For [livejournal.com profile] drabbles100.

"You did it, then," Arthur says, when he sees Guinevere. He does not wait for her to look at him, but looks away, to avoid those bright blue eyes.

"I did," she says, evenly, as if from a great distance. There's a crack waiting somewhere behind the steadiness, but he knows she won't show him that now. He clears his throat.

"I would have accepted him."

She says nothing.

"He'll be just as trapped as I was," Arthur says, then, softer still. For a moment, he lets their eyes meet. And then he looks away again. "He'll be as alone."

Short but very emotional, especially Arthur's last line. Poignant.

I'm sitting here trying to find words to describe my reaction. As a parent the idea of sending your child away and never seeing him or her again is one I can't imagine doing even if it was needed. Guinevere's strength is amazing and that comes through as does her sadness. There is a sense of tragedy and inevitability that underlies their words and filters through the whole thing. So much emotion and in so few words.
