He wants to tell Gippal to stop -- to let the thing alone. But at the same time, it's fascinating to watch. The way Gippal frowns in concentration, and the quick, sure movements of his hands as he reconstructs the run down machina. It's a new thing taking shape under his hands, almost like life, and Baralai is caught up in the spell.
For a while, he understands what the Al Bhed are doing. What they want to do. This is the only battle machina he's ever seen, except Gippal's machina weapon, of course, and it fascinates him as much as it repels him. He wonders whether a machina the size of Sin could possibly defeat Sin itself.
And then the spell passes, and Baralai shudders, hating himself for his own sacrilege. He doesn't stop Gippal, but now he watches him instead. Watching his sureness, his pleased smile, and thinking he'll die if he loves Gippal any more. That it's impossible to love him any more than he does.
He knows he should destroy the evil thing his lover has made, but Gippal seems so pleased with himself, and he looked so happy when he was hard at work on it, that Baralai couldn't bear to. Still, he's relieved when the thing wanders off.
