Summary: Nobody will be getting much sleep for a while. For
26cockjokes, aka
first_seventhe's birthday surprise.
"It's good to see I'm not the only one who can't sleep," Inara says, softly, standing at the door to the dining area. If she thought she was going to surprise Mal this time, she's sorely mistaken: he doesn't even twitch.
"I don't think anyone will be getting much sleep for a good long while," he says, and gulps down the last of whatever is in his mug. "Whether it's because of bad memories or because Kaylee and Simon are making noises nobody wants to hear."
"Are they that bad?"
"Worse than Wash and Zoe ever were," Mal says, and then he winces. Inara crosses the room, placing her hand on Mal's shoulder for a moment, and then taking it away and moving to make herself some tea.
"Would you like some tea?"
"Is this wiles-related tea, or just plain tea?"
Inara throws a smile over her shoulder. "I think I'm tired of wiles for the moment."
"Does that mean you're staying on Serenity?"
For a moment, she pauses. She's thought about it. She's thought about having to walk away from them again. She's thought about going back among people who can smile and make you believe they understand. She's thought about staying right here, where at least people wear their own faces most of the time.
"Inara," Mal says, almost gently, almost tenderly. She hadn't heard him cross the room to stand behind her. He touches her elbow lightly, clears his throat. "You're welcome to stay. I think we're all feelin' the need to draw together and stay close and, well..." A painful pause. "I want you to stay," he says, at last. "Don't know what's to come, but I figure we need to face it whole. Without too many absent friends."
Inara closes her eyes. "Yes," she says, finally, turning to look at him. "I don't know what will come next, either. But I think we should all face it together."
