Summary: Mal really wasn't getting used to it. For
feywood.
It was stupidly good to wake up next to the Tams, Mal was finding. Seven mornings in a row he'd woken up to them in his bunk, and he really wasn't getting used to it. They were already awake, this morning, talking in low voices and smiling at each other, touching in that familiar, easy way that really wasn't appropriate when it came to siblings and yet seemed to fit them so perfectly. Simon was brushing River's hair -- as Mal opened his eyes, he saw Simon pushing River's hair to one side to brush a kiss over her bared neck.
"Mal," River said, softly, turning her head, and Simon looked too, and both of them were smiling -- and that was near-dazzling, and something else he still couldn't get used to.
"Mornin'," he said. And he really should be hurrying out of bed, hurrying to get dressed, hurrying to get on with the daily life of the ship. But he felt more in the mood to sit there and watch them -- watch his lovers, and he couldn't get used to that thought either.
"Got to get used to it," River said, smiling again. "Not going anywhere."
"Should hope not," Mal said, gruffly, and with anyone else that might've been the moment he sat up and got moving, got out of bed, left the new intimacy behind. But he didn't. Instead, he reached out, tracing the bumps of Simon's spine with a finger. "How long you two been awake?"
"Not long," Simon said, arching his back a little at the ticklish touch. He ran the brush through River's hair a few more times and set it aside, turning to look at Mal again. "River woke me up."
"Dreaming again?" Mal asked, frowning. River shrugged.
"Doesn't matter."
"Does," he said, grabbing her by the shoulder and pulling her further onto the bed. "Me and your brother need our sleep, y'know. Can't have you wakin' us up all the time."
Can't have her scared out of her wits all the time, either. Simon and Mal both thought it, resolving not to say it, but that was useless with River anyway. She rolled her eyes.
"Sillies. I'm fine."
"If you're fine, you quit waking Simon up at absurd hours," Mal said, like an order. He yawned, still reluctant to move, and smiled when Simon moved further onto the bed and lay down beside him again.
"Should be getting up and doing captainy things," River said, reprovingly, but she lay down again too, cuddling up to Simon so that he put an arm around her. Mal smiled.
"Should be."
"But you don't want to," she said, almost in wonder, and Simon smiled, too.
"Don't need to be gettin' smug about it. Either of you." Mal put his arm over Simon, so that his fingertips brushed River's hip. "And don't go telling anyone I'm secretly a sap."
"We all know it anyway," River said. He was pretty sure she was rolling her eyes again.
"Your hair will get all tangled again," Simon said. River shrugged, stretching and then curling up against him.
"You can always brush it again."
Mal closed his eyes. He really wasn't getting used to this. He thought, maybe, that was a good thing. Wouldn't be any good to go taking these two for granted, these smart and beautiful creatures that he surely didn't deserve.
"You deserve," River said, her voice gone thick with sleep all over again.
"Even if you're infuriating sometimes," Simon said, a smile in his voice, and Mal huffed and bit his shoulder.
"Shut up, you. We're all getting some more sleep, not bein' insulting."
"Yes, sir," Simon said, and Mal really would have done something more to put him in his place, but he was far too comfortable to bother moving.

Truely beautiful. I love my sappy captain!
Pretty!
Are you ever going to finish your earlier series with these three?
Re: Pretty!
I've been thinking about it, but I can't find my original planning for it. I may if I can piece together where I was planning to go with it.
