FFVIII: Lesson

Fandom: Final Fantasy VIII
Pairing: Squall/Rinoa
Warnings: Angst, deathfic
Rating: G
Summary: Rinoa takes her son to his father's grave. For the Rinoa fanwork-a-thon.

"Where's Daddy's grave?"

Rinoa doesn't say anything for a moment. Their son looks like Squall -- like she imagines Squall looked like when he was that age, anyway. A little chubby, round-faced and serious, with untidy brown hair. He has her eyes, though. Her mother's eyes. Laguna says he sees Raine in the boy, too. For a moment Rinoa wonders if they'll ever see who he really is: not Squall in miniature, not a link to Raine, but a boy... She shakes the thought away. He's her son. She knows exactly who he is.

"Over there," she says, softly. She pushes him gently over to the big stone -- of course it's a big stone: Squall was the commander, after all, the one credited with winning them all the war. Sorceress killer. Sorceress tamer.

"What did he look like?"

"You've seen pictures."

The boy doesn't go close to the gravestone, but stands maybe a meter away, looking at it. "But..."

"He was always grumpy," Rinoa says, relenting a little. "You look like him when you're sulking."

"Don't sulk," the boy says, with a scowl. He reminds her so much of Squall then that it's a stab in the heart.

"Aren't you going to say hello to him?"

The boy gives the grave another look, then shakes his head. "He's not there. He left us."

Rinoa remembers the tearing feeling, the feeling of losing him searing her somewhere deep inside. They'd tried to bring him back, of course. They couldn't have done otherwise. But she'd known he was gone. "Yes," she says, softly. "He left us."

The boy looks up at her, all serious big eyes. "I won't leave you," he says, and she knows he's wrong (everyone leaves, in the end -- Squall's lesson for her) but she crouches down and pulls him close anyway.
