F: Bird To The Hand

Fandom: Firefly
Pairing: Mal/Simon, Simon/Kaylee
Warnings: None
Rating: G
Summary: Mal's glad he came back.

"You've only tamed a wild animal when it comes back to you of your own accord," River says, in his ear. Mal jumps, almost going for his gun. She laughs openly as she slips past him into the open. She looks down at Kaylee and Simon, who are sat just outside the ship, enjoying the sunlight, the grass. "A bird back to the hand."

"Sometimes, you still don't make any sense, little one," he says, shaking his head.

"Simon. He came back. You thought he'd go, gone forever, and you didn't want it, but you had to let him go. No call to keep him and he was getting right twitchy. Uppity. Questioning his captain. So you let him go."

"Couldn't hardly keep him when he wanted to leave and he was spoiling for a fight like that. Unless I wanted Jayne to think he could get away with the same tricks."

River shakes her head impatiently. "He came back, anyway. He came back and he stayed."

"Not for me," Mal says, looking down at Kaylee and Simon. They're laughing. Young. In love. Stupid. Sometimes, a sentimental part of him is glad, feels like he won this for them, making his crew and holding them together, so they couldn't help but come out changed, transformed, new, and ready.

The rest of him, practical and down to earth, thinks it would've happened in the end, anyway, without the mixing pot that conflict -- true conflict, a war in miniature, not just a job gone south -- brings.

River rolls her eyes. "Idiot," she says, at her most sensible and down to earth, the tone she usually reserves for Simon's little idiocies. She spins a little then, enjoying the breeze and the sun, and moves down the ramp and out of the ship before he can say anything else. He shakes his head.

Simon is laughing. Bright, open. It shouldn't cause any kind of pang in Mal's heart, and so he pretends it doesn't.

There could never have been anything, anyway. Not with Kaylee and the torch she carried for the doc. But Mal's glad he came back and stayed, all the same.
