"Have you ever been kissed, Paine?"
Paine looked up. Rikku was looking into the distance, her head tipped back so the wind tossed and caught her hair. Yuna had disappeared inside a moment before. "Why? Have you?"
"Of course!" Rikku gave her a look, then, bright and mischievous as always. "Gippal. He kissed me goodbye when he went off to join the Crimson Squad or something and then... nothing else. We might have made quite the couple if he'd ever said anything about it again. I bet he thought it was funny. But you're avoiding my question. Have you ever been kissed?"
"No," Paine said, after a moment. She shrugged. "It never seemed that important... I don't get why everyone is so bothered about it."
"I've never had a proper kiss. You know, like... well, like the earth moves when they touch you and you're safe and wrapped up in their arms and everything's going to be fine... That's what Yunie misses."
Paine raised an eyebrow. "You've been thinking too much about romance. Why would you need someone to make you feel safe? You can take care of yourself."
Rikku shook her head. "Not... safe-safe, but... secure. Important."
Paine shrugged. Rikku made a face at her, sidling over and nudging her.
"All grown up and not knowing what kissing's like at all? Tsk."
Rikku was suddenly all up in her personal space. Paine leaned back, raising an eyebrow. "Why do I get the feeling you've got ulterior motives?"
"Well, I was planning to kiss you, but if you're just going to be grumpy..."
"You were planning to kiss me?"
"Yeah," Rikku said, and she was suddenly close again, her hand touching the back of Paine's neck. "Like this, y'know?"
The earth didn't move. She didn't feel any safer than usual. Things probably wouldn't be fine for long.
But she kissed Rikku again all the same.
