FFVIII: In Dreams

Fandom: Final Fantasy VIII
Pairing: Seifer/Squall
Warnings: None
Rating: PG
Summary: Seifer'd been having weird dreams for a while. For [livejournal.com profile] fated_children.

The woman smiled at him. There was a pain somewhere in his head, but all he could think about was moving closer to her -- moving, perhaps, to kneel at her feet, to offer his service. He was aware for the first time that he was holding Hyperion. The woman was reaching toward him, a look on her face that didn't seem to fit there: something greedy, wicked. He couldn't think of what other expression she might have.

"Come to me," she said, and the sound of her voice was familiar too, but harder, more edged. It hurt his ears, scraping at the inside of his head, and yet he didn't want her to go away. She smiled thinly and reached out to him again, her hand like a claw, and it hurt, as if she was plunging her hand into his chest, and --

Seifer woke with a start to Squall's elbow firmly jammed in his ribs and the alarm clock shrilling in his ear. "Turn the damn thing off," Squall muttered, tousled and sleepy, and after a moment of trying to figure out what the hell was going on, Seifer got back to the real world and reached over to hit his clock, hard.

That worked.

He burrowed back down into the bed. His heartbeat was still racing from the dream. He moved closer to Squall, burrowing into the familiar comfortable warmth and making him grumble. "What's up with you?"

For a moment, Seifer couldn't think of an answer. He stared up at the ceiling, thinking about the dream -- the hot metallic scent, the swirl of power, the woman, fragile seeming in that sleek black dress, and yet... "Do you ever have weird dreams?"

Squall gave Seifer a blank look, trying to wriggle out of bed. "Everybody does, right? Seifer, let go. We've got to go to class."

"Mm, I don't feel like it."

"And I need to take my stuff back to my room before your roommate comes back." Squall waited a moment longer. "Seifer."

"I'm moving, I'm moving. Give me a minute."

"I've given you half an hour. I was awake even before your alarm went off."

Finally, to stop Squall nagging, Seifer let go of him, letting him climb over him and get up. He just burrowed back into the covers again, though, wrapping them around himself, though he sat up a bit to watch Squall moving around the room, collecting his things and getting dressed all at once. There was no point, after all, in letting the sight go to waste. Seifer was pretty sure very few people -- specifically, one -- got to see Squall walking naked around their dorm room.

"I was trying to tell you about my weird dreams."

Squall huffed. "So tell me. While I'm getting ready."

"Well... in them, there's this woman, and she reminds me of someone, you know? Someone I can't quite remember. And she's talking to me -- hell if I can remember exactly what she's saying, but it's like she can see into my head. She knows all about me."

"Figures," Squall said, pulling a shirt on and freeing the Griever pendant from underneath it. "She's a figment of your imagination after all. Are you going to meet me to spar later?"

"Sure," Seifer said, absently. "But really, Squall, it's not like any other dream I've ever had. She always talks about... about how she's a sorceress, and she asks me to be her knight -- she says I'm perfect for it, strong and clever and -- "

"It sounds like your dream lady knows exactly how to stroke your ego," Squall said, dryly. He made a vague gesture at the pile of books on the floor. "You read too much of that crap about sorceresses and it gives you bad dreams. Case closed?"

Seifer scowled, sitting up a bit more. "It's not crap. Sorceresses are documented fact."

"Documented history," Squall said, without interest. He shoved some of his things into his bag. "Have you done the Fire Cavern yet?"

"Of course. I've taken the field exam before, y'know."

"And failed it miserably every time," he muttered.

"Do it tomorrow. If you do it today, everybody else will have the same idea. Cut it fine."

Squall rolled his eyes. "We don't all benefit from procrastination, you know."

Seifer shrugged. "Suit yourself. But -- these dreams -- they feel so real. I feel like I'm really standing there and talking to her. You can almost taste the power in the air -- it's like steel. And it's like there's always a storm about to happen, like there's all this power held in. And yet she's just a normal woman -- or almost, anyway. She has this weird head dress, and she has this weird cape thing..."

"You have an overactive imagination," Squall said, rolling his eyes. "I'm going to class now."

"Have fun."

"You're not coming?"

"I think I'll lie here a bit longer," Seifer said, grinning, getting more comfortable on the bed to punctuate his word. "Class is for losers."

"And people who want to pass," Squall said, rolling his eyes, and left the room, closing the door behind him. Seifer smirked, tucking his hands behind his head and looking up at the ceiling.

"Being a sorceress knight would be good, but if you don't mind, Lady Sorceress, I'm comfortable here for now. I'm sure to pass my test this time, and there's Squall to keep me here -- he needs someone to fight him and fuck him and keep him from being a total icicle, after all. And it's too funny the way everyone thinks we hate each other."

He had an uncomfortable feeling, all of a sudden, that she was listening. Something tightened in his chest.

"Maybe you're not a dream after all," he murmured.

He was sure, though, that he imagined the soft laughter, the laughter with a threatening edge, the edge of madness.
