Summary: All the flowers of summer.
Love was always Kevin's gift. Paul only realises now how deep Kevin's love ran, how strong a foundation it was, and how unsteady he would have been without it. On the tree, his strength was his own, and yet he would never have gone even that far without Kevin Laine to live for.
Even with Jaelle, now, he thinks of Kevin. He thinks of Kevin every time it rains, because it was for Kevin that he didn't find a way to die after that rainy night. He thinks of Kevin because it still hurts to think of Rachel, and that, too, is Kevin's gift. And the summer, not a gift but earned -- each time it still hurts, and in Paul's heart Kevin dies again for every summer to come whirling back around.
Summer would be Kevin's. It seems all too obvious now that he was always meant for that. And all too obvious that he never really deserved Kevin's love, never deserved the love that was given freely and -- for the most part -- unthanked.
There are no flowers, to lay at Kevin's grave. All the flowers of every summer are his, and as he stands in the doorway looking out at the new summer, the bright blooms, in Paul's heart he gives them over and over again.
