"He's got Will's eyes," Allan said, looking down at the baby with an expression that made it look as if Djaq had put a live snake into his arms rather than a sleeping baby. Although, she thought, he might have more idea what to do with a snake -- like, for example, drop it. Which would be a bad idea in this situation, since Will was one of those protective fathers who kept an eagle eye on the baby at all times.
"We called him Robin," she told him, reaching out to adjust the blanket, to brush the wispy hair back. Allan grinned, still standing stiffly, still holding the baby as if vaguely terrified of what it might do. Djaq took pity on him, reaching out and carefully taking the baby back.
"I'll make sure to tell him that, when I go back," he said, relaxing a bit, finally.
Will raised an eyebrow. "You have to go back?"
Allan shrugged. "You know I do. There's no place for me here."
"We never meant to..."
"Get married and leave me out?" Allan shrugged. "I don't blame you. I was -- I was an idiot."
Djaq looked down at the baby in her arms. "Allan..."
"He really does have Will's eyes," he said, when the silence became almost unbearable.
