"You shouldn't be here," she says, almost gently. Allan shrugs, smiling -- the smile is a lie, the cocky attitude is a lie, but Djaq lets him have it.
"I just needed to know you were all okay. Guy's been rampaging around and even Marian's charming smile hasn't got anything out of him. I thought something might be going on in the forest. Like, maybe he'd caught Robin. Or Will. Or you."
"You need to pick a side and stick to it," she says, without much conviction: it's good to see him alive and well and grinning, lying, with his usual aplomb. She leans back against the tree, clenching her fists to stop herself reaching out, touching, skimming the lines of his face with her fingertips. "How are you?"
"I'm getting by. You know me."
"You could -- "
"Don't say it," he says, quickly. "Don't say I can come back. You know I burned that bridge. Robin would kill me if he saw me. You'd be best forgetting we were ever friends."
"So you say," she says, giving him a pointed look. "And if you had to, could you kill me? Or Will? Or even Robin?"
Allan shook his head, impatiently, like a horse shaking away a fly. "Don't say any more, Djaq."
"I still believe in you, you know," she says, quietly. He shakes his head.
"You'd be better not doing. I'll only let you down."
