The floor is pleasantly cool under her feet as she slips out of the warm tangle of blankets. Will makes a soft noise -- almost a snore -- but doesn't wake, just turning over. She can't help the fond smile, these days. There was once a time when she could watch him sleep and convince herself she only wanted to kick him for snoring or get him to move somewhere downwind. Now, well. Now, he tends to snore less and smell a lot better. And there's no way of ignoring how she feels about him.
Djaq moves over to the window, sitting down where she can look out on the quiet streets, though more often she finds her eyes drawn back to the bed. She's Safiya again more often than Djaq, of course: even she and Will are starting to get used to that. But she's quietly, brightly sure that it won't be long before there's another Djaq -- paler skinned, perhaps, and good with his hands, and perhaps he'll have Will's eyes. She's sure it'll be a boy.
She thinks that, maybe, she'll tell Will tomorrow. She can imagine the look on his face already, and it makes her laugh.
"Djaq?"
"Here," she says, stifling her laughter, sorry for disturbing him. She finds her way back over to the bed in the soft darkness, slipping in beside him again. "Did I wake you?"
"Missed you," he says, endearingly sleepy, and she laughs again and curls closer, holding him close, holding him tight, holding him safe.
