Summary: Time out for good behaviour. For [livejournal.com profile] feywood, with much love, because it's her birthday.

"Stay back and look after the ship," Mal'd said. Well, Wash knew what that generally meant. "Stay back and be ready to take off at any minute," generally, and sometimes, "Zoe's asked me to keep you safe on this one. Very safe." The tragic case of the prince being locked up in the tower for once. Sort of.

It wasn't like he never had company, though, now. It had been the case once -- Kaylee generally had something to be fixing, or passengers to be charming on board. And passengers weren't allowed up to the bridge, naturally. Now there was River, of course, who never scrupled about going anywhere and everywhere, poking her nose into everything. And there was Simon, who sometimes needed a sympathetic ear. And sometimes even Book would make his way up -- at first Wash had been wary of those visits, but they'd talked about everything but religion the first few times.

So it wasn't so bad, mostly. He had no idea what was going on this time, though -- it was a routine stop, on a planet that was generally pretty friendly, and even Simon and River had been let off their leashes.

(He wasn't sulking. He wasn't very manly, even he'd admit that, but he didn't sulk.)

He nearly jumped out of his skin when Zoe came up and wrapped her arms around his shoulders, kissing his cheek. "Wha -- I thought -- has there been some major accident and you're a ghost? You're supposed to be with Mal!"

"He took Jayne instead," Zoe said. She gave him a quick squeeze of a hug, then took hold of his chair to swing it round. "And since we're in a quiet sort of port, he thought you and me might enjoy some time alone."

"But -- "

"In bed," she said, with careful emphasis. She gave him a moment to respond before simply hauling him up and dragging him after her. He gaped for a minute, then grinned.

"Wow. Mal's being considerate?"

"Blink and you'll miss it."
