GB: Company

Fandom: GetBackers
Pairing: Shido/Madoka
Warnings: Sap
Rating: G
Summary: She watches over him.

"You're tired," Madoka says, before he even greets her. She smiles, her sightless eyes meeting his somehow, and she steps back. Mozart shifts, restlessly, and sits down again by her feet. "You should go straight to bed, Shido. Don't mind about me."

"I tried," he says, awkward, somehow always out of his depth with her. "But I thought about you, thought you might be waiting up for me, so I -- "

She raises her hand to cover a smile, and there's a blush to her cheeks, her eyes somehow happier. He breathes a silent sigh of relief that he's said the right thing: he's never known anyone like her, never felt anything like this before for anyone. All he knows are the clichés: butterflies and eyes meeting across a room and that feeling of belonging, of right -- but this is all that and yet still more.

"I'm glad to know you came back safely," she says. "But you really should go to bed."

One day, he tells himself, he'll have the courage to ask her to stay close, the courage to ask her if he can stay inside, and watch over her. For now, he nods awkwardly, and turns back to the door. Her hand catches it before he closes it behind him.

"Wait, Shido," she says, a tremble in her voice. Mozart is on his feet. She reaches out awkwardly, groping, catching hold of her coat and slipping into it, wrapping up warm. "I'll come outside too."

"But, Madoka..."

"You want my company, don't you?" she asks, with a smile, and there's a sudden warmth blooming in his heart he's only ever known with her.

"Yes," he says, because it's that simple. She follows him outside, and though she shivers in the cool night air, he doesn't insult her by suggesting she go back inside. He lies down on the grass, with his animals creeping closer around them both. Mozart settles, too -- just close enough to Madoka that he'll wake at a single movement from her. "You look after her, Mozart," he says, with a tiny grin. Madoka smiles, too.

"And we'll look after you," she says, soft as a night breeze, and Shido closes his eyes. It's irrational, to feel so safe, to feel so at home, when he's laying on the grass, out under the stars, with a young girl watching over him.

But he knows, already, not to question it.

Awwww. And I just said that aloud, too.

This was very sweet, but still very true to the characters. Actually... who, let's face it, are overtly mushy anyway. I mean, yeah, Madoka. But SHIDO? He's the mushiest damn guy, and he tries so hard to cover it up with aloofness but FAILS so BADLY. heh. So, yeah, this was perfect.

there's a sudden warmth blooming in his heart he's only ever known with her.

This was my favourite part because, wow, that made my heart skip a little. Definitely made the love he has for her feel very real. It made me happy for their future together.

Thank you!
