Summary: Kaylee suggested something to brighten everyone's spirits. For [livejournal.com profile] lemon_advent.

"It's Christmas today, you know," Kaylee said, brightly, to the silent table. Only Simon paid much attention to her: he smiled, briefly. River, her eyes somewhere far in the distance, finished her mouthful of protein before speaking.

"Christ Mass. A vestigial festival celebrating the birth of Christ, the Messiah."

The empty seat next to Zoe seemed to glower at them, rather.

"Wash would have liked it," Kaylee said, weakly. She pulled out her chair and sat down quickly, loading her fork and starting to eat, quickly, as if she were starving. Zoe and Mal didn't even look up. Jayne cleared his throat, speaking with his mouth full.

"Wash ain't here."

"Yes, I think we'd all noticed that, Jayne," Simon snapped. "Just go back to doing things you understand, okay?"

"What, right here?" he asked, with a lecherous grin, making a lewd gesture. Mal covered his face with a hand, letting out a sigh that came out as a hiss between his gritted teeth.

"Will the lot of you shut up? We ain't celebrating Christmas, Wash ain't here, Jayne ain't going to do anything disgusting and censored at the dinner table. We're all going to eat and then you, Kaylee, are going to stop that squeak the engine is developing. You, Simon, are going to go and figure out what supplies you need when we're next planetside. Zoe, you are..."

"I'll find something to occupy myself with, sir," she said, glancing at him and nodding.

"It wouldn't hurt to try a little seasonal cheer," Kaylee said, timidly. "Wouldn't have to be anythin' big. Just presents, and a cake -- I figure I'm gettin' good at making those mostly out of protein, you know. And -- "

"Kaylee. No."

Simon shifted uncomfortably. "I don't know quite where we could buy presents, but a cake would make a nice change."

"No," Mal said, firmly. Zoe cleared her throat.

"I don't see no harm in it either," she said, with the same kind of firmness. "Cake, and I'm sure we could find things to give each other, even if it's just little conveniences. I know Jayne's lost his razor, and Kaylee wants one of them fancy tools -- I'm sure I've seen them somewhere. Practical things, but still."

"Yeah!" Kaylee clapped her hands together, smiling again. "Oh, c'mon, Mal, please?"

"What am I going to do with you all?" he said, despairingly, but he was -- almost, at least -- smiling.
