FFX-2: Risks

Fandom: Final Fantasy X-2
Pairing: Gippal/Baralai
Warnings: Sap
Rating: PG
Summary: Taking risks for the one he loves.

Paine's hands were as quick and gentle with the dressings as her tongue was quick and sharp with words. She patched them all up silently, effortlessly, and they all sat quietly, savouring simply being alive after one of the hardest training scenarios they had faced so far. There didn't seem to be much to say. They had barely escaped with their lives, but they had survived the test.

Baralai was the first one to break the silence, and it was only in a murmur as he looked across at Gippal. "You put yourself at risk to save me."

"So what if I did?" he shrugged, wincing as the movement pulled his injury and meekly accepting Paine's annoyed look as she tended to his wounded shoulder. "Sorry, Dr P, didn't mean to do that."

Paine rolled her eyes and carried on with her bandaging.

There was silence for another almost unbearable length of time. Finally, Nooj spoke, looking down at the ground. "You two need to talk."

"What do you mean?" Gippal asked, and Baralai started asking only a second later, so they finished together and then looked at each other, trying not to smile, hiding their amusement because they sensed that Nooj wanted to say something serious.

"I don't really need to say it, you're both more or less adult now but... the way you're acting with each other is hurting the integrity of the group. If Baralai is in trouble, Gippal, you need to allow the nearest person to get to him, not just make wild charges like that. Paine would have been there sooner than you, but instead you left my side open to attack."

Gippal looked properly chastened, biting his lip. "I'm sorry."

Paine snorted softly and pushed at his injured arm, making him yelp and bat her hand away. "Don't apologise." Lower, she added, "We know how you feel about him. Why not say something instead of doing stupid things like that to impress him? It makes you look like an idiot, and if you don't do something soon, well, you'll prove you're an idiot."

"I'm not trying to -" he started, but Nooj, smiling and less serious now, cut him off.

"I'm not saying it's a bad thing, how you two are getting on but... try and keep it out of training, okay?"

Gippal nodded, and looked at Baralai carefully, biting his lip, wondering when he was going to take the risk and ask Baralai if they really felt the same, if their feelings were mutual. Baralai looked back, his heart hammering in his chest, and tried to smile. And tried not to look like a fool when Gippal smiled back and his stomach knotted up with nerves and desire.
