KH: Walk Away

Fandom: Kingdom Hearts (II)
Pairing: Axel/Roxas
Warnings: Angst
Rating: G
Summary: Roxas knows better than Axel that it's all an illusion.

If he had a heart, he'd feel hurt by the way Axel accepts things. Not for his own sake, but for Axel's. Hurt for someone else -- he doesn't remember who he felt it for, but he knows that once, somewhere, in some world, his other felt it, because he remembers what it was like. And that's just it. They don't really feel. In fact, all of it is illusory: the taste of Axel's mouth, the fire inside him, the two of them -- him alone, Axel alone. None of it really exists. None of it means anything.

Axel seems content to snatch at that and hold to it, as if it's something meaningful, like it's something real. In that sense, Roxas thinks, he's just like all the people he can't remember -- human, even in nothingness.

If he had a heart, it'd be for Axel, then, that he's setting out to find something. The truth. A way to bring back their hearts. A way to make it so that he can tell Axel how he would feel about him if he could feel, and have it not be empty, lying words. That, in itself, is supposed to mean something, he knows. That he'd set out to do that. For Axel.

When Axel asks him to stay, that's supposed to mean something, too. Roxas knows, looking at Axel, that he's imagining the hurt into him -- and if he could feel, that would hurt him. But he can't, and it doesn't, and that's what allows him to walk away.
