Pairing: Miles/Phoenix
Warnings: Angst
Rating: G
Summary: Miles always went away again.
"You're going away again?"
Miles didn't turn around. He knew Wright was there -- of course Wright was there, and it seemed rather foolish to have imagined he wouldn't be. Franziska had warned him, too. "Phoenix Wright is not going to let you get away again," she said, with a sly smile. He had thought her quite ignorant of the -- strangeness, between them, but perhaps not, perhaps...
"Don't ignore me, Edgeworth," Wright said, grabbing his shoulder. He wanted to shake the touch away and keep going, but... but that would be running. He turned to face him.
"What is it, Wright?"
"Aren't you ever going to learn to call me by my first name again?"
Miles raised an eyebrow. "Perhaps I could say the same to you. My first name is Miles, in case you've forgotten... Phoenix."
"You could call me Nick," he offered, inanely. "Like Maya does."
"That would not seem appropriate. You had something to ask me?"
Wri -- Phoenix sighed, and for some reason he didn't seem to be able to look up. For a moment there was an unhappy look there -- Miles had thought it reserved for when cases were going badly or Maya had been kidnapped, as she had been that time before... He shook his head, almost startled when Phoenix did start to speak. "I wanted to ask you not to go away again."
"My home is not here. I only came because Larry gave me the impression that you -- " he broke off. The words still caught in his throat, however untrue they'd been. And even if he hadn't been dying, he'd been ill, lying there so feverish and helpless, burning up from the inside --
"You could come back," Phoenix said, and then he said something else that Miles couldn't catch. He shook his head impatiently: impatient with himself, impatient with Wright.
"I have to go."
"Bye, then," Phoenix said, and Miles took care to avoid looking at his face. He suspected he knew the look that would be there and he wanted exactly none of it. But he couldn't escape what Phoenix shouted after him as he walked away.
"Some people miss you!"
