"I can't believe you managed to stay out here in wild moose country for more than a month," Vecchio said. He was grinning, almost smirking, and Kowalski decided he'd rather like to punch him, and only held back because Fraser was there and it wouldn't have been fair. "It's been, what, a year?"
"As a matter of fact," Kowalski said, "apparently, there are no moose around here."
"Fraser tell you that?"
"Yeah."
"He's mad," Vecchio said, glancing over at the corner of the room where Fraser was changing, and shaking his head in disgust. "Stark raving mad. He still wearing that bright red thing to bed all the time? It'd be like waking up next to Santa Claus."
"As a matter of fact," Fraser said, innocently, "I don't usually wear anything to bed."
Vecchio stared at Fraser for a moment, and then at Kowalski. "I didn't want to know that," he said, finally. "I just really did not want to know."
There was a moment of uncomfortable silence, broken when Fraser tossed wood onto the fire. Vecchio shivered, burrowing into the blankets bundled round him. Kowalski, who was wearing at least three layers, smirked a little. "Not up to the temperatures round here, hm? Maybe it's that bald spot, letting out all the heat."
"Ray," Fraser said, almost reproachfully, but he did get up and come back, just a moment later, with a bright red woolly hat. Vecchio eyed it in disgust.
"Do you ever wear any other colour?"
"Originally," he said, as if it was an answer, as if it was relevant, "Santa Claus wore green."
"I wonder," Vecchio said, to the hat in his hands, "what the hell I'm doing out here."
He jammed it on his head. Kowalski managed, with a heroic effort, not to laugh. He would, after all, have to put up with Fraser's best friend for another week or possibly more.
