Summary: The touching story of a cop, the cop's replacement, and a Mountie.
Once upon a time, there was a cop. This cop had a friend called Benton Fraser, whose number one passion in life was catching criminals. He was extraordinarily good at it, despite his habit of doing things like licking dirt and believing everything he was told. He was a Mountie, and he was exactly as mad as he sounded. The cop loved him in a way that made him wonder if he himself wasn't more than a little bit mad. Especially when he got bullets in him because of it.
(The cop, by the way, was called Ray Vecchio. Except when he wasn't, but he'd put that behind him by now.)
The story might've ended there, and Ray would probably have liked nothing better than to deny his feelings for a few more years and eventually shack up with the Mountie, but fate (or God, or sheer dumb luck -- they were all fickle bitches, anyway) had decided otherwise. Another Ray had moved in and was showing all signs of shacking up with the Mountie, and the first Ray almost felt he was doing better at it than he had, and might even be a little more handsome. Which, with Benny, was always a plus, because if you weren't handsome or at least striking, you got ignored -- not by Benny himself, but by the fanclub that inevitably gathered around him.
Ray had then made a decision which, in retrospect, was really stupid. He shacked up with the second Ray's ex-wife. It'd seemed almost like a fair trade at the time, but Stella Kowalski wasn't a patch on Benton Fraser, even if the sex was good.
Which brought Ray to where he was standing as this story opened -- outside a small shack in deepest darkest Canada. He was trying to get up the courage to knock. He was wondering who would open the door -- would it be Benny, or might it be the second Ray? And what state of undress would they be in?
"The things I do for you, Benny," he muttered, thinking that he'd really rather not see Stanley Kowalski naked just yet. And he knocked on the door.
