"Stephen's coming home tomorrow."
"I know, I know, you never shut up about it," Gwen said, semi-amiably, and she rolled her eyes as she leaned across the table to put Will's plate down in front of him. She was looking particularly harassed, which wasn't surprising, considering that nearly everybody seemed to have friends round that day, and she was cooking in a frenzied dash. Will had resolved to help her, but then a friend had called and with one thing and another... "Is that okay? Anything else you want?"
Will beamed at her. "I'm fine. Stephen asked in his letter if you'd cook him -- "
"I know that too, Will," Gwen said, laughing a little. "You've only been going on about it since you got the letter. I know what Stephen's favourite food is, and even if he hadn't asked I'd be making it, okay?"
"Just reminding you."
Will was about to say something else when James came in at something of a dash. He smiled ingratiatingly at Gwen, completely failing to hide the fact that he was going to ask something. "Gwen, you think you could make me dinner a bit early tomorrow night? I've got somewhere to go and -- "
"Stephen's coming home tomorrow," Will said, mildly. James looked at him and rolled his eyes.
"Yeah, I know, but this is important."
An edge of indignance crept into Will's voice and he maneuvered so he could kick James' ankle, rather hard. "So's Stephen!"
"Stephen will be here the day after tomorrow too," James said, rolling his eyes. "And stop obsessing over it. Get a girlfriend or something."
"Are you seeing a girlfriend?" Gwen asked, her eyes dancing a little. James shut his mouth quickly and then glared at Will, kicking the back of his chair so that it skidded on the kitchen floor and made a horrible noise.
"I hate you."
"I didn't do anything!"
Gwen huffed softly. To her credit, she only raised her voice a little. "Will you two stop arguing? You're always at it these days -- yap, yap, yap. It's enough to drive a body mad!"
"Do they need handling again, Gwen?" Robin asked, sticking his head into the kitchen. Grinning, Will applied himself to the task of eating his dinner. James tried to make himself scarce quickly, probably to avoid being around when someone told Robin about his girlfriend.
"Stephen's coming home tomorrow," Will said, quickly, his mouth still full. He swallowed what was in his mouth and grinned up at Robin. "And James will be too busy seeing his girlfriend to eat dinner with us."
James' indignant yell probably scared the visitors, but it surprised no one else.
