MOAG: Memento

Fandom: Memoirs of a Geisha
Pairing: Chiyo/Pumpkin
Warnings: Angst
Rating: G
Summary: Pumpkin tries to keep two things to remind her of Chiyo. For [livejournal.com profile] 10lilies.

Pumpkin knows that she isn't supposed to go near Chiyo anymore -- that Hatsumomo intends them to be the bitterest of rivals, that their friendship and the few bright days it brought has to be over now. There will be no more sitting together and laughing, no more talk of men -- and no more knowing smiles and knowing glances, and she will never feel Chiyo's slim hand in hers again, comforting and kind.

That doesn't mean she has to let Chiyo go entirely, she says to herself, fiercely now because she has to keep up her courage. She can't talk to her anymore, but Hatsumomo can't come inside her head -- she can think about Chiyo all she wants.

And surely, surely, taking one of her new hair ornaments -- simple and pretty and cheap enough that she won't miss it -- cannot be so bad. It is like a memento. If she were Hatsumomo, it could be a memento to remind her of some conquest.

No, she tells herself fiercely -- no. She will not be like Hatsumomo. That will be her second memento to Chiyo -- she will face it all as she's sure Chiyo would, ready and waiting for whatever life brings to her.
