10lilies.
Hatsumomo is laughing when she enters the okiya. Chiyo hesitates, about to slide off and face any repercussions in the morning, because a happy Hatsumomo is usually a drunk Hatsumomo. She can smell the drink on Hatsumomo immediately, and she bites her lip as Hatsumomo comes in close to her, right up in her face.
"You will lie about this tomorrow," she says, and her speech is only a little slurred. "You will say that I came in earlier."
"Have you been with one of your boyfriends?" Chiyo asks, before she can stop herself, and flinches away from the expected slap. Hatsumomo laughs.
"No, little one, there is nothing for you to tell now. I have been with a woman. And one day, if you are very, very lucky, you will be able to have any man or woman you like, as I can. It is such a pity you still stink so of fish, or I might be willing to help you..."
Chiyo stares up at her. She laughs again, and pulls away, and her steps are perhaps a little unsteady.
"One day, little Chiyo, you might understand." She pauses, considering, then turns back. She lurches forward, and Chiyo moves awkwardly to catch her, thinking that she must have stumbled, and hoping to steady her so there won't be some accusation of trying to trip her. Instead, Hatsumomo's lips are suddenly pressing hard against hers, and before she even registers that Hatsumomo has pulled away, and her mocking laughter is ringing in her ears. "There, a taster for you, Chiyo."
Chiyo stares at her again. This time she does not turn back until she is a few meters away, and then there's a mocking smile on her face again.
"Take care to keep my secret, Chiyo. Remember, there is nothing to tell."
She nods, dumbly.
