"Make sure you're holding that right over me, Chiyo," Pumpkin whispers, nervously. They're waiting for Hatsumomo, just outside the okiya, and the rain falls down around them. Chiyo imagines someone high up in the sky tipping buckets of water down to give Japan the rain. She smiles at Pumpkin.
"It's okay, Pumpkin," she says, holding the umbrella a little higher and ignoring the water creeping down her own neck. "You're going to look beautiful, I promise. Nothing I do will spoil your looks."
Pumpkin gives her an anxious watery smile. "No, I can do that all by myself, can't I?"
