FFVIII: The Right Moment

Fandom: Final Fantasy VIII
Pairing: Seifer/Quistis
Warnings: None
Rating: G
Summary: Quistis can't avoid Seifer forever. Happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] irish_ais!

"I've passed my exam, now," Seifer says, quietly. There's a thread of control running deep in his voice -- he hasn't liked losing his temper ever since the whole debacle with Ultimecia and chopping people's limbs off because he was so full of his anger and hers and all those emotions swirling together. It's a good thing, he thinks, that Ultimecia never seemed to have PMS. Because things might have been a lot worse if she had.

Or maybe she was in a permanent state of PMS. That could've explained a lot.

Quistis doesn't say anything for a long, long moment, and Seifer figures it's a good thing he keeps such a tight control on himself nowadays. She hasn't deigned to look at him yet. She hasn't deigned to look at him in a long time, and Seifer's not surprised that she isn't starting now, though it's still pissing him off somewhere inside where he expected that if he got the grades, if he stopped being that presence in her class that had always ruined everything, she'd talk to him again.

She still hasn't deigned to look at him when she finally speaks. "I know that."

"Finally," he says, nodding slightly. He leans against the balcony, looking out at the quiet stars. Squall has it easy with Rinoa, he thinks, bitterly. She's a born romantic. Sometimes he thinks Quistis has liquid bitchiness running in her veins instead of blood -- except that, you know, he probably deserves this. "I thought... I thought things could go back to normal after that."

"Normal? What's normal?" she asks. She could be asking a philosophic question, or she could be being bitter. He's not sure.

"Whatever we make of it, I guess," he says, awkwardly, after a minute. He reaches out and touches her back lightly, half afraid of her thrusting his arm away. She allows it to remain, and he can feel all the tenseness settled there, at the base of her spine. He withdraws, for now.

"I don't think things between us could ever be normal," Quistis says, after another long silence. Seifer is getting the hang of those now. They almost don't annoy him anymore.

"Couldn't they?"

She turns to look at him at last, and he's amused to find hints of amusement deep inside her eyes. She hides it well, though. "You're very persistant."

"You haven't told me to go jump off a cliff, yet," he says, shrugging. "And I'm trying to find the right moment to kiss you."

The smile tugs her lips into a smile this time, and she surrenders to it more or less gracefully. "Now would be fine, if you insist."
