FFVIII: Five Times Zell Hit On A Girl And One Time He Didn't
Fandom: Final Fantasy VIII
Pairing: Squall/Zell
Warnings: None
Rating: PG
Summary: Zell's unsuccessful relationships with girls. For
shealakiah.
Zell was fourteen when he first tried to ask a girl out. She was older than him -- fifteen, sixteen -- and belonged to his class only because she'd broken her leg the year before. He was fairly besotted.
She wasn't, unfortunately.
Undeterred, though somewhat crushed, Zell found himself liking a girl who helped in the cafeteria instead. She was friendly and thought the way he stuffed himself on hotdogs was funny, and she called him a cutie all the time. He missed one too many classes because he was spending time with her and Quistis descended on him -- she wasn't his instructor at that point, but she liked to look for him, and for anyone else who might come her way.
The scolding and lecture she gave him actually put him off hotdogs for a while. And girls.
He did once have some kind of a crush on Xu. That was pretty much a non-starter, of course, but he did vaguely say something about it -- and she didn't laugh in his face very vaguely: the laughter was rather obvious and rather unfair, in his opinion.
That cured him of liking girls for a while too.
Zell liked a girl in his class for a while. She seemed to like him too -- spent most of her time passing notes to him in class. One day, he found the courage to ask her out, to ask her to come to Balamb with him. She said yes.
She stood him up.
The last girl he liked was the girl from the library. Zell really, really liked her, and once he managed to tell her about it (not vaguely, but with plenty of stuttering and spluttering) the feeling was mutual. Everything seemed to be going fine.
Except she never wanted him to go to the training center or out on dangerous missions and she didn't understand why he didn't think of himself as a hero or put on any airs and graces -- and though he hadn't expected it from a quiet girl who worked in the library, she rather looked down on his attachment to his mother.
He could tolerate most of it, but he was a mommy's boy and he liked it.
He was eighteen when he first decided he liked a guy. He was glad it wasn't Seifer or something -- but that it was Squall was bad enough, even if Rinoa had declared a relationship with him impossible. Well, even if and taking into account that fact.
He tried to be smooth about it. Things never seemed to come out quite right for him, though, and this was no exception -- no exception at all. He stumbled and stammered his way through it and found Squall was looking bored and so the words locked up even more, tighter than ever.
And then Squall rolled his eyes, and casually, ever-so-casually, fisted a hand in his shirt, dragged him close and kissed him.
(He'd never had that reaction from a girl. But then, he'd never liked anyone like Squall before -- no one as strong. And no one as abrupt. And -- he was overthinking it, he knew it, and Squall bit down hard on his lip and that was somehow really nice and he wanted more of that -- and less comparing him to other people.)
