"Your brother said you've got something to tell me," Mary says, at last: Jane gets the feeling that all through the afternoon, that was the question she was leading up to. She's not sure how to answer it, either. Her immediate response is to wonder which brother, come to the conclusion she probably means Barney, and wonder if Bran might perhaps want to know about a crush Barney's been harbouring for the past few years.

"Something to tell you?" she asks, and it's only with an effort she makes her voice light. "I don't know of any secret I've been keeping from you, Mary."

"I don't know what he was talking about," Mary says. She looks away for a moment and then glances at her sidelong, the look in her eyes making Jane wonder if she really doesn't know after all. "He said it had to do with me."

"He's annoying," Jane says, without thinking, and then she forces a laugh. "I really don't know what he was talking about."

Mary nods slightly, looking down at her lap. For a minute, Jane thinks that's the end of it -- and the start of an uncomfortable silence, the first one between them since they met again in London that Wednesday afternoon. Then she clears her throat. "Actually, he said -- and you can't get mad at him, really, Barney's the sweetest thing ever -- that you... you like me."

"He... he said that?"

"Is it true?"

Jane looks at Mary for a long moment, wondering. She used to think that Mary -- being Mary, and so sometimes contemptuous and quick to complain and quick to judge -- would reject her immediately. She's come to see more recently that that's not the case, and if it had been, if she hadn't known she was wrong secretly, then she'd never have fallen in love with Mary.

But still, she thinks, biting her lip, hesitating, hesitating: what if Mary hates her for being different this way? What if -- ?

"Jane," Mary says, quietly, and she's biting her lip too. "It's okay, you know. I... well, I'll go first. I like you."

Jane looks up, slowly. Mary's smiling that pretty smile of hers, but her blonde hair is tumbling down into her face and half-hiding her eyes, as if to hide her own reaction somewhat. And then nothing can go slowly anymore and Jane's reaching out, taking Mary's hand in hers and squeezing tight, holding tight, and just as quickly she's moving closer, tilting her head, closing her eyes --

The first kiss is awkward and limbs that have no right to be in the way are all of a sudden in the way, and their teeth click and noses bump, but then -- then it's perfect, a perfect soft kiss, and Jane's sure she must be dreaming.

"Don't keep secrets from me anymore," Mary says, laughing, teasing.

"I won't," Jane promises whole-heartedly.
