FFVIII: From A Distance

Fandom: Final Fantasy VIII
Pairing: Squall/Fujin
Warnings: None
Rating: G
Summary: Fujin watches from afar. For [livejournal.com profile] fated_children.

Seifer would like to think he was the only one Fujin ever saw anything in. As a matter of fact, he wasn't. He probably wasn't even second or third on the list, a fact that would probably have wounded him deeply had Fujin ever told him. Fortunately, she knew him well enough to recognise that it would be a severe blow to his pride. Especially because the first man she'd ever loved had been his rival. Squall Leonhart. Commander now, and well above her, but she remembered --

Well. The first time they'd met, she hadn't even spoken. She'd bumped into him and a pile of papers she was carrying for Quistis flew out of her arms and spiralled all over the floor. She'd seem him before, of course, mostly in the library, but it was the first time they'd actually met. And she couldn't help but think, staring into his gray-blue eyes, that that was probably the most cliché -- and embarassing -- meeting she could imagine.

He hadn't wasted time asking her if she was okay. Instead, he bent down, swept the papers up into a neat pile, pressed them into her arms, and went on.

Hardly a romantic meeting, but she wasn't really a romantic -- and Seifer was the one who picked chick flicks for them to watch, not her.

She'd always liked people watching. Narrowing her focus wasn't hard. He seemed oblivious to it all, a fact that she's now relieved for, though back then she used to harbour fantasies that he might one day come over to her table and sit with her, or have to do a project with her, or just talk to her one day in the library.

She watches him now from afar: commanding his troops. Seifer sneers and makes some derogatory comment, Raijin laughs. She does not.

For the first time, he seems to know she's watching him. They must be too far away for him to see her, or at least, for him to pick out who she is, but he raises his head and she thinks that, perhaps, he might be smiling.
