FFVIII: Out

Fandom: Final Fantasy VIII
Pairing: Raijin/Fujin, Seifer/Squall
Warnings: None
Rating: PG
Summary: Squall and Raijin and Fujin got Seifer out of prison.

It was a hug. Or, well, at one point it might have been supposed to be a hug, but it was barely recognisable as such because it was more like an attack that would be lethal in battle, because it took Seifer's feet right out from under him.

"Fu," he said, gladness and surprise and laughter all mingled and breathless in his voice. He wrapped his arms around her carefully and squeezed. He'd missed her more than he'd thought he would. But less than he'd expected to have to, he remembered, thinking back to his trial and the way everyone had seemed to be on his side. "Good to see you again, too."

"TOO LONG," she said, briskly, not blushing but still, showing the embarrassment as she got up, running her left hand through her hair. Her right, he noticed with a little regret, was still mostly immobile. Years of treatment did little to help the damaged muscles and nerves. All things considered, he was surprised that her hug had been so forceful. Maybe it was a good thing she could only use one arm.

"Could've been longer, ya know," Raijin commented, and Seifer looked quickly at him, taking in the few changes that had happened while he was serving out his time. Raijin was broader, if possible, and his always present grin had widened, if that was possible. "But it's good to see ya."

"It's good to be out," he said, nodding, and then he turned to glare at Fujin, his tone a little accusing. "So how much did you pay, to have me out earlier?"

"NOT US."

"It wasn't us, ya know?"

Seifer eyed them carefully. They'd been spending too much time alone together. "Okay. Whatever. So... what's changed?"

Raijin moved a little closer to Fujin, wrapping his arm around her waist with a grin. "Not much. We've missed you, ya know. All the action happens around you."

"And it's not always good action," Seifer reminded him, not missing the possessive arm, but not commenting, either. It was the natural way of things -- something he'd already seen the potential for and expected, and was comfortable with.

"NEVER BORING," Fujin said with a shrug and a smile.

"True," he grinned.

"If you're looking for more action, I guess that money I spent towards your bail wasn't entirely wasted."

Seifer turned to face Squall. He knew that smooth, quiet voice anywhere, even if it was saying more words than he'd ever heard it say all at once. Squall, a little older, a little taller, his face the same, smooth, bland mask, but his eyes, alive and full of something new, something Seifer thought might even be wisdom. He thought that Squall looked more likely to smile now, though of course, he didn't. Squall, as beautiful as ever and as dangerous.

"You put money towards my bail?"

"Garden paid part. I paid the rest."

"You want me to go back to Garden?"

He was staring, he realised. He hoped Squall didn't take the look as a challenge -- because it wasn't supposed to be. The last thing he wanted to do was bring back that old rivalry.

The first thing he wanted to do was throw Squall onto the ground and kiss him six ways from Sunday, but that could wait. Following as a close second deep dark desire was the need to make Squall smile, see what he looked like when he did. He didn't think he ever could do that, but he wanted to.

"No."

"NOT GARDEN."

"He's not Commander anymore, ya know?"

Seifer raised his eyebrow. It was clear that Raijin and Fujin stood with Squall now -- as much as with him, or maybe more. Maybe that loyalty hadn't been tested yet -- but Seifer wasn't about to try and test it. That wasn't his style (anymore). He looked at Squall, deciding that he'd be the best one to ask. "So... what are you?"

"Freelance mercenary."

"Why?"

"Because I got too big for Garden to handle." He rolled his eyes, taking an unconscious step closer so that Seifer's heart jumped and his stomach tightened. "When people start asking for the Commander to come out on missions, and refuse to take anyone else..."

"I see," Seifer said, and couldn't help thinking that Garden wouldn't mind that, it was just Squall that minded. "How does being a freelancer solve your problem?"

"I can refuse missions. And while they want me in charge of missions, people don't believe I can do them alone. They're right, in a lot of cases. Most Garden missions aren't solo attacks."

"Right... So why did Garden pay, even in part, for my bail?"

"Leaving gift to me," Squall said, shrugging. For a moment, he wouldn't meet Seifer's eyes, then he looked up, careful, guarded. "Fujin and Raijin are part of my... group. Of mercenaries. I wanted to..."

He trailed off, as if he couldn't say it, and Seifer would've been content to wait (forever). But Fujin broke in.

"WORK WITH YOU."

"Yeah, ya know, we wanted you back, and Squall wanted to have you, and then we're big enough for some missions, ya know?" Raijin elaborated a little, waving one hand around and keeping his other arm wrapped around Fujin's waist. Seifer could see that Raijin's arm was getting rather tight. He realised that it was terribly important -- to all three of them -- that he join them.

"Okay. Whatever." Seifer grinned, "Figure I've got some debts to pay off to you three anyway."

Squall smiled, and Seifer's heart leapt uncomfortably again.

It was going to be a lot of fun, he figured, smiling ruefully as Squall turned away and Fujin and Raijin moved to follow him. He was going to be chasing after Squall every chance he got, and then there'd be a few arguments along the way, he was sure, and Raijin was sure to need a good kick, now and then, and Fujin would probably still be only too glad to supply one.

He followed the other three, tipping his head back to look up at the sky, a clear, beautiful blue, as if it was glad to see him, too, as if everything was smiling at him. It was a ridiculous notion (more likely everything is smiling at the chance to attack and kill you, Almasy, he reminded himself), but it was one that made him smile right back at everything.

He was glad to be alive, and free.

Squall turned and smiled again (though maybe, Seifer quickly reminded himself, he was smiling because he was thinking of getting Seifer in his sleep, killing him then).

"You'll break your face, doing that," he said, teasing and taunting and Squall just rolled his eyes, and Raijin laughed, and Fujin gave him a little kick.
