Summary: Baralai doesn't think of himself as a nice man, really.

"Sir?"

Baralai looked down at the little kid who had tugged on his robe, when he heard her plaintive tone. An Al Bhed, he thought, with reflexive disgust, and then, thinking of Gippal, hated himself a little for it. He crouched down to the kid's level, noting her dirty face and the tearstains on her cheeks. "What is it, little one?"

"Are you... a nice man?"

He bit his lip slightly, wondering if to say yes would be signing up for a guilt trip if he didn't help the little kid. And he wondered, too, if he could say he was a nice man, because sometimes, he thought that he wasn't. Finally, he nodded slightly. "Most of the time, yes. Do you need my help, little girl?"

It cost him, to ask that of the little Al Bhed. He was afraid that helping an Al Bhed would be frowned on by others who served Yevon. But still, Gippal...

"No," she said, brightly, as if unaware of the brief strain she'd placed on him, and skipped away. Baralai straightened up to watch her go, a little confused, but relieved too.

The relief haunted him. He'd been relieved that she didn't need his help, and that brought guilt, too. He should have been willing to help her, but he wasn't, because she was Al Bhed. Knowing Gippal had already told him that you could be an Al Bhed and still be a good, hard working person. And who was he to judge on one sight whether that little girl was a good person or not, worthy of his help or not?

With that uncomfortable thought he continued, feeling as if he wanted to help all the little kids he saw.
