Summary: You can't leave a man behind. For
30_friends.
All SeeDs are taught to be able to do this. Zell finds it impossible to grasp, though, that now is time. Especially because it's Squall. Invincible Squall, Commander Leonhart, the apple of Cid's eye and the pride of all of Garden.
"Battle situation, Zell," Squall says, and even his voice is strained like the rest of him, shot through with pain. "You know what to do. Lionheart -- "
Zell's throat closes, he can't swallow. He picks up Lionheart, feeling it strangely heavy in his hands. "You're sure?"
"Do you want to get caught?" Squall asks in a fierce hiss, and then he chokes off a cry of pain. Zell's not even sure where to start with the injuries Squall has: can't heal him without getting caught, can't take him with them without killing him, can't leave him without leaving him to certain death in the opposing side's hands.
It's the only way, but that doesn't mean Zell has to like it.
Squall's eyes are intense again. "I'd rather you than anyone else," he says, clearly. He smiles, suddenly, serenely, an expression so out of keeping with Squall and with the situation that it cuts right through to Zell's heart. "You're my friend."
And now he's said that, well, what else can Zell do?
"I'm sorry, man," he says, feeling Lionheart heavier than ever in his hands.
"Nothing to be sorry for," Squall whispers, and closes his eyes, ready for it.
